Political parties and presidential candidates for the 2027 general elections have signed a National Peace Accord, pledging to conduct issue-based campaigns and shun violence, hate speech, misinformation, incitement and personal attacks.
The accord was signed on Tuesday in Abuja at a ceremony organised by the National Peace Committee in partnership with The Kukah Centre, ahead of the statutory commencement of campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections on Wednesday, August 19.
The event was attended by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan; Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu; political party leaders and candidates; members of the diplomatic community and other stakeholders.
The agreement commits political actors to prioritising national interest, peaceful competition and issue-based campaigns while discouraging conduct capable of undermining the credibility and peaceful conduct of the 2027 elections.
However, some prominent political figures were absent from the ceremony, meaning the accord should not be interpreted as having been signed by every presidential or National Assembly candidate.
The signing marks the first national peace accord of the 2027 election cycle and is intended to promote a peaceful campaign environment as political activities intensify ahead of the elections.
