Experts Urge Nigerians Not to Abandon Cooking Gas for Firewood

0

Nigerians, especially at the grassroots, have been urged not to resort to the use of firewood as a result of the economic hardship and recent hike in the process of cooking gas.

The warning came from researchers and climate change advocates at a programme held in Abuja on Tuesday to discuss ‘Maximising energy transition opportunities in Nigeria.’The concern comes in the wake of the price hike of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, also known as cooking gas, from N1,350 to N1,500/kg.

It was also reported that the prices of cooking gas peaked at N1,500/kg in some retail outlets in Ogun and Lagos States as of Sunday with the average price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas in Abuja rising by 41.6 per cent to N17,000 in different areas.Reacting, the Director for Partnership and Development, Shehu Yar’Adua Foundation, Amara Nwamkpa, admitted that the latest development could force some Nigerians to consider resorting to the use of firewood for cooking.

Nwamkpa, however, urged Nigerians not to be hasty in their decision to abandon cooking gas for firewood because of exposure to smoke and its health implications.

The researcher added that at a time when the world is aiming toward an energy transition occasioned by climate change, Nigerians should start considering the option of renewable energy and clean cooking. He said, “The transition to clean cooking is not an attempt to completely eliminate firewood but to reduce the exposure and inhalation of smoke in the process of its use.

These are some of the things that cause respiratory diseases and 40 per cent of the pneumonia cases we are having in the country.

Principals and parents condemn JSS book on abortion, stating the content is not part of the curriculum.

A viral post on X, formerly Twitter, sparked discussions among netizens about a Junior Secondary School Three science textbook, which details the process, types, and reasons for abortion, as well as family planning, writes GRACE EDEMA

Page 135 of the Classic Basic Science and Technology for Junior Secondary School Three used by some schools in Nigeria, partly reads, “There are two types of surgical abortion. Dilation and curettage (D & C): The cervix is dilated (opened and expanded) and a special instrument is used to scrape or scoop some linings and other materials in the uterus. D&C, also called vacuum aspiration, is used when the pregnancy is under 15 weeks.

“Dilation Evacuation (D & E): This involves dilating the cervix and using narrow forceps to evacuate the embryo that has formed bones. It is more difficult and requires more techniques than a simple D & C. It is used for 15-24 weeks old pregnancy.”

An X (formerly Twitter) user Alex Onyia, who posted the book’s cover and page on abortion, raised the alarm over the content, which he described as harmful information for learners.

Onyia wrote, “This book is teaching Jss1 students in Nigerian schools how to do abortion with clear images. Parent wake up and save your children. NERDC approved this!

“Corruption is not just about stealing money, it destroys our coming generation!”

The book, published by Thursmay Publishers, is authored by M. Abdussalam, F.A Ibekwe, D.E Akintelure and B.B Akintelure and has the approval stamp of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council on the cover page.

In Nigeria, the approval of school textbooks is primarily overseen by NERDC. The NERDC is responsible for developing and reviewing curricula and ensuring that educational materials, including textbooks, align with the national curriculum and meet the required standards.

Also, NERDC has the statutory responsibility to: develop, review, and enrich curricula at all levels; undertake and promote book development and local authorship for quality assurance; and conduct educational research to inform public policy formulation and implementation.

The book further explains the reasons for abortion, the consequences of unsafe abortion, and others.

But the All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Public Schools and the Parents Teachers Association strongly condemned the book for containing a chapter that covered the different types of abortion and how to use family planning in preventing it.

Both groups said such detrimental content was not in the Nigerian curriculum.

The National President of ANCOPPS, Musa Ibrahim, told our correspondent about the efforts they had put in place to investigate the book.

Ibrahim said, “We have set machinery in motion to ensure that any such books brought into schools will be seized immediately. We have liaised with the Ministry of Education to obtain copies for analysis, and we intend to use this as a point of advocacy with the ministry. We find the contents highly offensive, and school principals have already been instructed to take action.

He added, “The information in the book is not part of our curriculum. We teach topics like reproduction and a bit of sexuality in JS three and SS one, but the aim is to ensure that students understand they should not endorse such behaviour. These topics are not meant for JSS 1 students, as they are not included in the curriculum.

They labeled it as ‘sex education’ or ‘sexuality education,’ but we made it clear that we do not want it, and they should remove it. In the SS classes, reproduction is taught solely for examination purposes, as the students are semi-adults. ANCOPPS does not support this material, and we are taking steps to ensure it is confiscated.”

He advised parents to be cautious when purchasing textbooks not recommended by schools and assured stakeholders that principals in government schools were diligent in scrutinising these materials.

Unregulated packaged foods overwhelm Lagos markets as regulatory agencies face challenges.

Sale of unregistered processed and packaged food products in both physical and online markets despite the existence of regulatory agencies poses significant risks to public health and safety, reports CHIJIOKE IREMEKA

At a busy makeshift stall in Oyingbo Market, Lagos known for its vast sales of food items, Mr John Udom, a trader in his late thirties, was serving his many customers.
With a blend of humour and skilful price haggling, he reassured each buyer that they would be satisfied with their purchases.

After a few minutes of lively negotiations with the other customers, he turned to our correspondent and in the same manner, requested what items would be purchased.

Our correspondent requested several brands of packaged powdered paps, corn and cassava flours.

Seemingly glad to have a customer with multiple orders, Udom reeled off the order to his shop assistant stationed in the inner parts of the shop.

Shortly after, the items were brought and the trader listed the prices of each item.

In a bid to confirm the correctness of the product, this correspondent carefully perused each item for the brand’s name and product labelling, which includes, the declaration of content of ingredients under composition, expiry or best before and manufacture dating as well as the batch or lot numbers.

According to the Pre-Packaged Food, Water and Ice (Labelling) Regulations 2019 of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, it is prohibited to manufacture, import, export, distribute, advertise, sell or use a pre-packaged food without a date marking, batch number, registration number, name of the food, brand name, labelling information, list of ingredients, name, address and contact information of the manufacturer or distributor, among other requirements.

Date marking involves a legible display of “the day, month and year of manufacture on the label; when a food must be consumed before a certain date to ensure its safety and quality the “Use-by Date” or “Expiration Date”, the “Best-Before Date” or “Best Quality Before Date” shall be declared.”

Missing NAFDAC REG NO

Still at Udom’s store, this correspondent discovered that almost all the packaged items lacked a NAFDAC Registration Number, the manufacturer’s details, except cell phone numbers.

The NAFDAC REG NO or NRN is a unique registration number or certificate of registration issued after a product has passed the quality and standard test carried out by the agency.

After the discovery, this correspondent told Udom that the items lacked the numbers.

For example, the powdered pap and fufu (cassava flour) produced by Madam Aloevera Foods, had no NRN and no product details, except an address of No 1, Market Street, Oyingbo, Lagos State and a phone number.

A check of NAFDAC’s registration site for the food product brought the result, “No matching records found.”

No more stopping to check papers’, police reveal NPF E-CMR benefits

0

The Nigeria Police Force has highlighted the potential benefits of the Electronic Central Motor Registry innovation aimed at revolutionising how vehicle information is verified and handled on the road.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, shared the development through a series of social media posts on Thursday, highlighting the ease and efficiency of the “e-policing” innovation.

Adejobi said under the leadership of Inspector-General Olukayode Egbetokun, the Electronic Central Motor Registry system has been launched to make roads safer and the policing process smoother.

The FPRO said this new system allows vehicle owners to register their vehicles digitally and provides a quick response for emergencies.

If your vehicle is registered with the NPF E-CMR and gets stolen, you can instantly flag it as stolen through your online profile,” the statement read.He said the system then alerts all field officers nationwide within seconds, improving the chances of swift recovery.

He also highlighted that one of the benefits of the E-CMR is the removal of paperwork.

“With the NPF’s new E-CMR system, you don’t need to carry around physical documents. Access all your vehicle info digitally—quick, easy, and secure,” it added.

He stated that it would also help prevent the sale of stolen vehicles and improve recovery efforts.

“Wole Soyinka: Water occupies space; I prefer wine.”

0

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has disclosed that he enjoys wine as an alternative to drinking water.

He said rather than giving the necessary inspiration and satisfaction, water takes up space and he tries to avoid water as much as possible.

Speaking in an interview with CNN’s Larry Madowo, the literary icon explained that wine does the magic for him; either for sleep or work.

Responding to a question on why he substituted water for wine during the interview, Soyinka said, “Water just takes up space and you know and it belongs to other commodities. So, I am not keen on water. I avoid water as much as possible.”

A good, robust wine either sends you to sleep right away or inspires you to work. You never know which way it (wine) will work,” the Nobel laureate, who turned 90 on July 13, 2024, said in a teaser of the interview shared by Madowo on his X account.

Reflecting on his literary journey and how advancement in technology has impacted his writing, Soyinka explained that he no longer writes on paper.“I no longer can write on a piece of paper, except maybe scraps of poetry,” he said.

On how he’s catching up with advancements in technology, he said, “You don’t attempt to be up to date with everything. Because after a while, it gets too much.”

Soyinka added, “And the next thing, you have a machine which talks, and it talks back to you. I said shut up I am the one doing the writing, and then it’s attempting to correct me, what type of nonsense is that?”

Explaining how he gets inspired to write even at 90, the literary icon said,  “I get my best ideas in isolation. And that isolation includes even being on a plane where nobody is talking to me. My space is total isolation.”

CBN instructs payment service providers to start tracking PoS transactions.

0

The Central Bank of Nigeria has directed all Payment Service Providers to route all transactions from PoS terminals at merchant and agent locations — physical or electronic — through an approved CBN Payment Terminal Service Aggregator.

It also issued a 30-day deadline requiring service providers to comply with enhanced routing guidelines for Point of Sale transactions. This move aims to strengthen the monitoring of electronic transactions across Nigeria and decentralise PoS transaction routing, addressing concerns about the centralisation of such transactions under a single entity.

The apex bank, in a circular signed by Oladimeji Yisa Taiwo on behalf of the CBN’s Payments System Management Department on Thursday, stated that all PoS transactions from merchant and agent locations must now be routed through any CBN-licensed PTSA.

The circular read, “To achieve the objective of tracking electronic transactions in Nigeria, the Central Bank of Nigeria, in August 2011, granted a Payment Terminal Service Aggregator licence to Nigeria Interbank Settlement System Plc. In furtherance of the above, the CBN hereby directs acquirers to route all transactions from PoS terminals at merchant and agent locations, whether on physical or electronic PoS terminals, through any CBN-licensed Payment Terminal Service Aggregator.”

This development follows the expiration of the 5th September deadline for PoS agents to formally register their businesses with the Corporate Affairs Commission.

Although the directive was challenged in court, the CAC recently announced that it has commenced taking drastic actions, including shutting down PoS businesses that failed to register.

The directive on PoS business registration comes against the backdrop of frequent fraud incidents involving PoS terminals and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s plans to prevent trading in cryptocurrency or virtual currency.According to a report by Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc, PoS terminals accounted for 26.37% of fraud incidents in 2023.

Junior Pope: Boat mishap caused by ignorance and negligence—NIWA

0

The National Inland Waterways Authority has disclosed that the boat mishap in which the popular Nollywood actor, Johnpaul Odonwodo, popularly known as “Junior Pope,” and others lost their lives was caused by ignorance, negligence, and non-adherence to due process on the waters.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive of NIWA, Bola Oyebamiji, disclosed this in Onitsha, Anambra State, on Thursday, during the ‘2024 safety sensitisation campaign on Nigerian waterways’ organised for boat operators, stakeholders, and staff.

PUNCH Online had reported that the news of  Junior Pope’s death was shared on Wednesday, April 10, by filmmaker, Samuel Olatunji.

“Four actors, including Jnr Pope, fell into the Anam River on their way to a location, and their bodies have been recovered,” he had said.

Family, fans, and celebrities were in tears as the late actor was laid to rest on May 17 in his hometown of Ukehe in the Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Oyebamiji, represented by the Area Manager of NIWA, Suleiman A. Nicholas, said the passengers on the ill-fated boat did not pass through the normal process as they just went to the waterfront and jumped into the boat and moved.

He said, “The boat mishap in which Junior Pope and others lost their lives was caused by ignorance, they did not pass through the normal process, they just went to the waterfront and jumped into the boat and moved.

They were demonstrating inside the boat and their demonstrations caught the attention of the boat operator before they realised their mistake. They hit a wooden object that capsized their boat and they sank and got drowned, and unfortunately, they were not on life jackets. It was an avoidable death and unfortunate. May their souls rest in peace.”During the sensitisation, he, however, said NIWA had warned boat operators and passengers that ply the waterways to register their boats with the agency to avoid arrest and seizure of such boats by NIWA Police.

According to him, NIWA has issued a marching order of “No life jacket, no travel” to boat operators and passengers across the country, warning that if any boat operators or passengers are caught operating or travelling without a life jacket, they will be severely dealt with or face prosecution.
