Police To Resume Tinted Glass Permit Enforcement In January

The Nigeria Police Force has announced that enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy will resume on January 2, 2026.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, attributing the decision to rising security concerns and an increase in vehicle-related crimes.

According to Hundeyin, the move followed a careful review of emerging threats and the need to enhance public safety. He clarified that there is no court order restraining the police from enforcing the law on tinted glass, noting that enforcement was earlier suspended voluntarily in October to allow motorists time to regularise their documents following a court matter.

“Recent trends reveal a disturbing rise in criminal activities perpetrated with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass,” the statement said. “Some individuals and organised criminal groups have exploited this gap to conceal their identities and facilitate crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping and other violent crimes.”

Hundeyin quoted the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as assuring Nigerians that the enforcement would be carried out professionally, with respect for citizens’ rights and in strict compliance with the law.

He urged motorists who require tinted glass permits to apply through the approved channels to ensure compliance before enforcement resumes.

The police had temporarily suspended enforcement of the policy in October, partly in consideration of public concerns and engagements with the Nigerian Bar Association.

Reaffirming the Force’s position, Hundeyin said the police remain committed to enforcing all existing laws with fairness, transparency and respect for citizens’ rights, while working closely with stakeholders in the justice system.

The Nigerian Bar Association had, in September, filed a suit against the Inspector-General of Police over the tinted glass permit policy, describing it as illegal. In April 2025, the IGP introduced a policy directing motorists to obtain annual tinted glass permits from the Nigeria Police Force through an online application platform.

At its National Executive Council meeting in August 2025, the NBA resolved to challenge the legality of the policy in court, arguing that it violated citizens’ rights and raised concerns about the continued application of the Motor Tinted Glass (Prohibition) Act of 1991, a military-era law.
