A Hero’s Departure, A Lasting Legacy in Ijebuland
Under the leadership of Comrade Akeem Temitope Akilo, the Convener of Ijebu Youth March For New State, we join millions across Nigeria and beyond in mourning the glorious transition of a national treasure, a royal institution, and an enduring symbol of truth and justice, His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, GCON, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland.
Oba Adetona’s reign, which began on April 2, 1960, spanned over six remarkable decades marked by bold leadership, cultural preservation, and unwavering advocacy for the socio-political advancement of the Ijebu people. As one of Africa’s longest-reigning monarchs, Kabiyesi’s voice carried the weight of truth, spoken with courage, integrity, and deep wisdom.
For us, the youth of Ijebuland, HRM Oba Dr. S.K. Adetona, GCON was not just a royal figure; he was a generational guide, a voice of conscience, and a relentless champion of our collective aspiration: the creation of Ijebu State. His belief in the justness of our cause gave us strength. His words inspired action. His commitment gave our movement legitimacy.
Even as he occupied an ancient stool of tradition, the revered monarch remained deeply invested in the future. He empowered the youth, promoted education, and supported visionary governance through initiatives like the Oba Sikiru Adetona School of Governance at Olabisi Onabanjo University.
Today, we pay tribute not only to a monarch but to a mission-minded king whose legacy must now become our responsibility. We pledge to uphold the ideals he lived for. We pledge to carry forward the call for justice, equity, and the full recognition of Ijebuland through the establishment of Ijebu State. Though his voice may be silent, his message echoes louder than ever.
May his royal soul rest in perfect peace. May his legacy endure through us.
