Ogun State prepared for National Sports Festival – Olopade

The Director-General of the National Sports Commission and Chairman of the Main Organising Committee of the 2024 National Sports Festival, Bukola Olopade, has reiterated that Ogun State is ready to host the 22nd edition of the festival, which has now been scheduled to be held from May 16 to 30, The PUNCH reports.

Ogun State was announced as the host of the 2024 games during the closing ceremony of the 2022 edition in Asaba, Delta State but it has suffered two postponements from its initial proposed date of November 2024.

Former Minister of Sports Development and now Minister of State for Industry John Enoh had postponed it till January 2025 before the Joint Technical Committee approved a new date for May 2025.

While the incessant postponements have sent signals of unpreparedness on the part of Ogun State, Olopade insists that the latest shift in date was strategic.

“For the National Sports Festival, Ogun State is ready,” Olopade said while commenting on The PUNCH’s projection for Nigerian sports in 2025.

“Facilities are being readied around the state, and Anthony Joshua coming to light the torch, on the invitation of Governor Dapo Abiodun, is a good thought. That will add a different touch to the game, and the pushback will also allow us to introduce some groundbreaking concepts.

This groundbreaking concept introduces young, promising athletes as the 38th state to compete in the Games. It is a strategic move to nurture our best young talents and expose them to top-level competition alongside seasoned athletes. This aligns perfectly with the mandate from President Tinubu to foster talent development and innovation in Nigerian sports,” he said.

The Ogun State government has commenced reconstruction and renovation works of the MKO Abiola International Stadium and the Alake Sports Centre, Ijeja, Abeokuta, while more facilities are being put in place at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne.

During our correspondent’s last visit to Ikenne, some outdoor basketball courts and a sitting terrace have been added to the facilities at the Remo Stars Stadium.

The Joint Technical Committee of the Games are expected to hold a second meeting and inspection visit to address all pending issues before the Games commences.

No fewer than 15,000 athletes are expected to participate in the Games with Babcock University to serve as the Games Village.

$30m investment, over 1,000 jobs lost to FG demolition -Landmark CEO

0

The founder of Landmark Africa Group, Paul Onwuanibe, has spoken about the devastating impact of the sudden demolition of Landmark Leisure Beach, which wiped out over $30 million in investments and left thousands of lives disrupted.

Speaking on The KK Show via YouTube on Sunday, Onwuanibe described the emotional and financial toll of the event, which took place with just seven days’ notice.

“Let’s put this into perspective; Landmark consists of three parts—our business, our leisure, and our lifestyle. What was demolished was our leisure business, a significant part of both our revenue and our physical infrastructure. The initial reaction was shock, and then anger. You go through the five stages of grief—shock, anger, bargaining, concern, and finally acceptance,” he said.

Onwuanibe revealed that the beach site had been acquired in 2006 for $17 million and further developed with a $30 million loan secured abroad.

It was my life’s work—27 years of hunting, farming, and working. Six years ago, we borrowed $30 million to develop that beach. Half of that money was spent on infrastructure you couldn’t even see, like underground drainage, water reticulation systems, and fiber-optic cables. The demolition wiped out six years of investment in six hours,” he said.

The demolition affected not only Landmark’s ecosystem but also the livelihoods of thousands.

“We had over 1,000 employees and 50 small and medium enterprises directly impacted. Over 4,000 people were employed, and with Nigeria’s dependency factor of 16, the ripple effects are unimaginable,” he said.

Onwuanibe recounted the chaos and losses experienced by the businesses within the beach’s ecosystem.

“Many businesses didn’t have time to remove their equipment—TVs, fridges, even furniture. There were guests in the pool when Breeze was being demolished. It was tragic,” he added.

The demolition also disrupted services for the beach’s 160,000 members and violated existing contracts.

We had 9.2 billion Naira of members’ money in our accounts. There were over 200 contracts—supply of water, fumigation, lifeguard services—all of which had to be renegotiated. Sometimes, you wish there was a natural disaster so you could invoke force majeure, but this wasn’t the case,” he lamented.

Beyond the physical infrastructure, Onwuanibe highlighted the larger impact on the surrounding community.

“The guy parking cars on the streets lost his job. The person selling sweets at the gate had no customers. Hotels built outside Landmark that thrived on the four and a half million annual visitors were affected.”

Despite the immense challenges, Onwuanibe emphasised resilience.

“At some stage, you have to accept it and move on. You either lie down and cry or get up and go,” he said, underscoring his determination to rebuild and learn from the experience.

In April 2024, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, ordered the closure of Landmark Beach for demolition purposes.

According to him, the demolition was necessary because the landmark centre was on the federal government’s Right-of-way.

The Edionseri family, in an earlier statement signed by Dr Adebayo Adebowale, confirmed the passing of the 89-year-old business luminary after a brief illness.

Drunk Zambian policeman frees 13 suspects to celebrate New Year

A Zambian police officer reportedly under the influence of alcohol released 13 detainees to celebrate the New Year, sparking a manhunt for the escaped suspects.

The BBC reported that Inspector Titus Phiri allegedly took cell keys from Constable Serah Banda at Leonard Cheelo police station in Lusaka on New Year’s Eve, freeing individuals held for crimes including assault, robbery, and burglary.

I didn’t compose ‘Odun nlo sopin’ – Deborah Fasoyin

Gospel music legend, Mrs Deborah Fasoyin, renowned for the iconic song Odun lo sopin, has revealed that she is not the composer of the timeless track.

In an interview shared online by FM 365 and reported by Church Times Nigeria on Thursday, Fasoyin disclosed that the song predates her choir’s popular 1979 recording.

“I must confess to you, till tomorrow, we don’t know the composer of the song. We only added two verses to it,” Fasoyin stated.

“There were many CAC churches in Ibadan. In those days, whenever they had revival programmes towards the end of the year, you’d hear people sing the song Odun lo sopin (meaning ‘the year is coming to an end’). That chorus belongs to CAC. We only added two verses.”

Speaking in Yoruba during the interview, Fasoyin emphasised that the song was already widely known before her choir formally recorded it.

“We didn’t go to any mountain to pray to get the song. It was everywhere before we recorded it,” she clarified.

Meanwhile, online commentators supported Fasoyin’s account, with some recalling that Odun lo sopin had been sung as far back as 1975.

Despite her repeated public acknowledgements over the years, many have continued to associate Fasoyin with the composition of the song.

Her honesty, however, has drawn widespread praise, with fans commending her transparency.

Odun lo sopin, popularised by Fasoyin and her choir, remains a staple in end-of-year gatherings, evoking prayers for divine protection, guidance, and provision as the year draws to a close.

The agency reports that the song’s enduring relevance and spiritual resonance have cemented its place in the hearts of many, making it a cherished tradition that transcends generations.

Osimhen rules out Gala Jan exit, eyes trophies

Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen has reportedly ruled out a January exit from the Turkish Süper Lig as the Nigeria international’s dream is to win trophies with the Turkish giants, The PUNCH reports.

Since joining Galatasaray on loan from Napoli in September, Osimhen has been in impressive form scoring 12 goals and providing five assists in 14 appearances across all competitions.

His scintillating form has seen him continually linked with a move away from Turkey. A return to Napoli is very unlikely following a breakdown in the player’s relationship with the club.

English Premier League clubs Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal are all interested in the Super Eagles striker.

Turkish outlet Fanatik recently reported that United officials have already met with their Napoli counterparts to discuss terms. However, Galatasaray remain adamant about keeping the striker until the end of his loan spell.

Also, Osimhen on his own part has maintained that he does not wish to club the club during the January transfer window.

Confirming the striker’s stance, Nigerian broadcast journalist Buchi Laba, who is close to Osimhen’s entourage, on his X wrote that the Nigerian has turned down several offers as he desires to win trophies with the Yellow-Reds.

To make this clear as ABC: Victor Osimhen rejected every offer in January 2025 to stay back at Galatasaray for the full season,” the journalist wrote.

“Yes there’s legit concrete interest but the plan has always been to stay at Galatasaray for the full season and win trophies with the team.”

Despite the striker’s stance, former Galatasaray coach Hamza Hamzaoğlu believes the Turkish club cannot afford a permanent deal for Osimhen, potentially opening the door for United or Arsenal to secure his services.

Galatasaray are on the verge of securing their 25th Süper Lig title, sitting eight points clear at the top of the league table and sixth in their Europa League group standings.

New Year Message: Tinubu tells Nigerians to overcome political, ethno-religious divides

0

President Bola Tinubu has appealed to Nigerians to ignore side distractions that are capable of undermining the nation’s growth and development.

He noted that while the nation continues to stay on the right course to prosperity, some persons “still see things through the prisms of politics, ethnicity, region and religion.”

This is contained in the president’s nationwide address in his New Year message on Wednesday.

He urged the citizens to be patriotic in their dealings as he called for a better national allegiance.

We are on the right path to building a great Nigeria that will work for everyone. Let us not get distracted by a tiny segment of our population that still sees things through the prisms of politics, ethnicity, region and religion.

“To achieve our national goals and objectives, we must become better citizens and uncompromising in our devotion and allegiance to Nigeria,” Tinubu said.

The President also stressed his administration’s commitment to facilitate significant economic reforms for sustainable growth.

On a personal note, thank you for placing your confidence in me as your president. Your trust humbles me, and I promise to continue serving you diligently and wholeheartedly.

“We will continue to embark on necessary reforms to foster sustainable growth and prosperity for our nation.

“I seek your cooperation and collaboration at all times as we pursue our goal of a one trillion-dollar economy. Let us stay focused and united.

“As far-reaching and foundational as our reforms are, they can produce the desired outcomes only through shared common values and identities, and unconditional love for our country,” the president urged.

Tinubu also assured Nigerians of his resolve to boost food production and reduce inflation on food and drugs to 15 per cent, while strengthening the economy in 2025.

He highlighted economic growth indicators, including lower fuel prices, rising foreign reserves and a stronger Naira, as signs of progress in 2024 that would continue into the new year.
