Adire makers criticize government inaction as the market is overrun by counterfeit Chinese products.

Traders and producers of local fabrics known as adire in Ogun State have expressed their displeasure over the alleged failure of the federal and state governments to address the incursion of Chinese-made and adulterated fabrics into local markets.

The traders raised the alarm that the Chinese were massively producing and shipping adulterated adire fabrics into Ogun State.

According to the traders, the ‘fake adire’ has flooded local markets, threatening the survival of local producers and their centuries-old craft.

Findings by Saturday PUNCH revealed that the imported adire fabrics are being sold at lower prices, making them compete favourably with locally produced materials in the state.

A Former Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, during a visit to the popular adire market in Itoku, Abeokuta, Ogun State, had disclosed the government’s plan to ban the importation of foreign adire products.

Also, former President Olusegun Obasanjo had urged the Federal Government to ban the importation of Chinese adire into the country to save the local adire market from imminent “bastardisation” by the Chinese.

Obasanjo pleaded with the government to use all its resources to safeguard locally made adire from Chinese imitations.

However, the importation of Chinese-made adire has continued unabated, according to local producers.

The manufacturers and traders of original adire fabrics blamed the government for failing to regulate the importation of textiles and enforcing policies that protected local industries.

They warned that the decline of local textile production could lead to significant job losses and economic instability in communities reliant on the trade.

Speaking with Saturday PUNCH, a leader of the Adire Market, Abeokuta, Michael Ogunfidodo, said it was regrettable that the government failed to intervene in curbing the incursion of adulterated adire fabrics despite efforts by the traders and other stakeholders.

Ogunfidodo stated that a threat to local fabric industries would have a ripple effect on the country’s economy.

He said, “Any nation that cannot protect its local industries, culture, and heritage is in big trouble.

“Production of adire fabrics goes through about nine stages and, at each stage, you have hundreds of youths and women earning a living. If you remove all these people from the stages of production, we will have a massive loss of jobs.

For Nigeria to grow as a nation, we have to patronise our locally made products, but the influx of Chinese adire is a big challenge to the growth of our local economy.”

Ogunfidodo also berated the government for its perceived lack of commitment to addressing the issue, emphasising that authorities were aware of the importation of the fake fabrics and the measures needed to eliminate them.

“If the government really has the intention of banning fake adire, they will, irrespective of anything. The government knows what to do; they know the steps to take, but it seems they are not interested in ending this,” Ogunfidodo said.

Also speaking, the woman leader of the Adire Market, Mrs. Modinat Oyetola, expressed disappointment over what she called the government’s indifference to regulating the importation of fake fabrics, which had plagued the local industry for years.

“I don’t think the government is interested in regulating the importation of the foreign-made adire fabrics because we have been on this for a long time,” Oyetola said.

She maintained that only the government had the authority to curb the proliferation of fake adire fabrics in the country.

On her part, a promoter of adire fabrics, Adejoke Somoye, revealed that between 50 to 70 women and youths involved in the production and marketing of the local fabrics lose their jobs every three weeks due to the dominance of imported adire.

Somoye disclosed that 80 per cent of adire fabrics sold in Nigerian markets were ‘made in China’, a trend she described as harmful to the cultural and economic sustainability of the local industry.

“The people importing these fabrics are rich and powerful, and this is one of the challenges that I had when I started the campaign against fake adire. I received a lot of threats; these rich and powerful people are the ones selling the designs to the Chinese for mass production and importation into the country.

“I believe the people involved in this are untouchable by the government, and this is why it has been difficult for the government to take decisive action to end the influx of fake adire into Nigerian markets,” Somoye said.

Gbenga Daniel insists that the creation of a new state from the Old Ijebu region is long overdue and achievable.

0

The Senator representing Ogun-East and former governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel on Friday insisted that having a new state from the Old Ijebu Province comprising of Remo and Ijebu divisions might not be a tea party but it is long overdue and doable.

Daniel said that the opportunity had once presented itself 28 years ago but it was bungled due to some irreconcilable differences between the two divisions of Remo and Abeokuta.

The Senator said that the people of Remo and Ijebu must therefore seize the current opportunity to galvanise, forge a common front and avoid any distractions and divisive tendencies that could hinder the fruition of the dream.

Otunba Daniel disclosed this on Friday at a stakeholders meeting held at the palace of Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Adewale Ajayi in Sagamu.

Daniel said that he has the option of staying away to dodge the unnecessary crisis trailing the desire to create a new state from old Ijebu Province but he would rather like late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, courageously pursued his convinction that the creation of the new state will enhance and accelerate the socio-economic development of Ogun East Senatorial District.

He said “Our late Sage, Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo had his own fair share of experience while at the crossroads of choosing between what he considered right and doing nothing.

“The path of honour he chose was to follow his convictions without minding the mundane sentiments and criticisms.

“Pa Awolowo, we were told, thought the people of Ikenne drinking from Uren River was unhealthy and he decided to bring pipe borne water to the community but the people, we gathered, refused to drink the tap water because some people tried to exploit their ignorance to say there were too many chemicals in the water.

He said that the free education policy of Chief Awolowo was also misconstrued to be plans to take away the children from helping their parents on the farms.

Daniel said that decades later, “The policy has proven to be the most futuristic development policy ever embarked upon by any political leader or administration, not only in Nigeria, but arguably in the whole of Africa, if not in the entire world having given
the people of the South-West the competitive edge in civilization that we have today”.

The Senator said that the government of President Bola Tinubu has also been faced with lots of criticism for taking bold and courageous moves that are pivotal to revamping the economy and put the country in a better shape.

Daniel said that as someone whose father is from Remoland and mother from Ijebuland, he remains a bridge builder towards ensuring that a new State is created from the old Ijebu Province for the shared prosperity of all.

Meanwhile, in a communique read by the Baamofin of Remoland, Barr Bayo Onafuwa, the stakeholders including the traditional rulers from both Remo and Ijebu divisions agreed for the composition of seven-man committee each for the two divisions.

Onafuwa said that these committees are to work with their respective paramount rulers to fine tune the discussion on the state creation.

He said that “Their terms of reference are to determine the name of the new state to be created from the old Ijebu Province, determine the location of the capital, the local government structures and they are to submit their report within the next one month”.

0

Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has described the passing of the Deputy Chief Whip of the Federal House of Representatives, Adewunmi Onanuga, who represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, as a great loss.

According to the minister, Onanuga’s death was shocking and devastating. She would be greatly missed for her contributions to governance and her role as a strong advocate for women’s inclusion in politics.

Hajiya Sulaiman-Ibrahim also condoled the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass, and the good people of Ikenne, Sagamu Remo, which she represented.

The statement signed by the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Jonathan Eze, on Thursday reads in parts:

On behalf of the Ministry of Women Affairs, I express my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, the Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, who passed away yesterday after a brief illness.

“As a champion of women empowerment and social welfare, Hon. Onanuga’s contributions to the 9th and 10th National Assembly will never be forgotten. Her leadership and intellect earned her admiration from colleagues and constituents alike.

“I am not unaware of her several initiatives aimed at promoting women’s rights and empowerment. Her passion and dedication to the cause were inspiring, and her legacy will continue to inspire future generations of women leaders.

“I mourn the loss of a true advocate for women’s empowerment and a dedicated politician.”

Onanuga passed away on January 15, 2025, after a brief illness.

Born on December 2, 1965, Onanuga was first elected to the House in 2019 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress. She served as Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development in the 9th Assembly and was re-elected in 2023, taking on the role of Deputy Chief Whip in the 10th Assembly.

Oyo prince takes Governor Makinde to court, seeks to nullify Owoade’s appointment as Alaafin.

0

One of the princes that contested for the position of Alaafin of Oyo, Lukman Gbadegesin has headed to court to challenge the appointment and presentation of the staff office to Prince Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo by Governor Seyi Makinde.

Gbadegesin, who was said to have been recommended by a faction of the Oyomesi is appealing that the court set aside the appointment, approval of appointment and presentation of staff of office to a new Alaafin carried out by the governor.

In a pre-action notice signed by his legal representative, Adekunle Sobaloju SAN, a copy of which was addressed to the governor, he insisted that the governor’s actions run foul of the Oyo State Chiefs’ Law 2000.

The kingmakers and the governor have been embroiled in a heated dispute over the selection of a new Alaafin.

Five out of seven Oyomesi members had recommended Gbadegesin for the role. However, on January 10, Makinde approved Owoade as the Alaafin and presented him with the staff of office.

During the event, the governor declared that he would not allow the Alaafin stool to be politicised, adding that individuals who allegedly paid to destabilise the traditional institution in the state would face prosecution

“By announcing a different candidate, the governor has usurped the powers of the Oyomesi, violating the Alaafin Chieftaincy Declaration of 1961, which makes the Oyomesi the sole authority for the selection of the Alaafin.

The governor’s alleged reliance on Ifa consultation contradicts the judgment of the Oyo State High Court of 19th December 2022, which declared Ifa consultation in the selection process unlawful, as It Is not provided for in the Alaafin Chieftaincy Declaration of 1961, and the allegations of bribery by two Oyomesi members, raised over a year after the selection, lack credibility and were not formally communicated to the Governor or investigated,” the letter read.

His lawyer noted that he is seeking “an order setting aside the purported appointment, approval of appointment and presentation of staff of office to Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as Alaafin of Oyo as it was done in violation of the provisions of the Chief’s Law of Oyo State, 2000, the Registered Alaafin Chieftaincy Declaration of 1961, unlawful, unconstitutional, invalid, null and void” and a declaration that he “was validly selected and or appointed by the Kingmakers of Alaafin of Oyo as the candidate to fill the vacant stool of the Alaafin of Oyo in accordance with Chiefs Law of Oyo State, 2000 and the Registered Alaafin Chieftaincy Declaration of 1961 and therefore his appointment is valid, lawful and proper.”

Apostle Suleman suggested that Nigerians are accountable for the challenges they are facing.

The Senior Pastor of Omega Fire Ministries, Apostle Johnson Suleman, has attributed current economic hardship to poor decisions made during the 2023 elections.

Suleman made this assertion during Tuesday and Wednesday’s two-day “Recovery Conference 2025” in Bauchi State, the Daily Post reports Thursday.

Ahead of the event, he paid a courtesy visit to the Government House, where he met with Governor Bala Mohammed.

While commending Mohammed for his leadership and hospitality, Suleman described him as “a man of honour” and pledged his continued prayers for the state’s progress. Senior pastors, including Dr. Kingsley Aigbe, accompanied him.

However, speaking with journalists at the Government House, Suleman didn’t mince words about the nation’s state, blaming Nigerians for their electoral choices.

“What Nigerians are going through is partly what they deserve. Before the election, we cried out, we screamed, we yelled. The man (President Bola Tinubu) who came into leadership had no manifesto—just a sense of entitlement with his ‘it’s my turn’ mantra,” Suleman declared.

He criticised Tinubu’s administration for poor policy decisions and the mismanagement of the country’s oil sector.

The oil sector has been plundered. In the next 10 to 15 years, I don’t think Nigerians will recover from the damage. Now, all we can do is pray,” he lamented.

Suleman urged Nigerians to reflect on their voting decisions ahead of the 2027 elections, cautioning, “If they’ve suffered enough by then, perhaps they’ll make better decisions.”

Echoing Suleman’s concerns, Mohammed, also took a swipe at Tinubu’s policies, warning of their potential to harm the nation irreparably.

“Tinubu’s policies don’t have a clear vision and are taking us to the road to perdition and destruction. That is why when I talk about tax reforms, it is not because I don’t want reform, but because I want reform that will have a national impact. I don’t have anything against the president but respect,” Mohammed said.

The governor vowed to continue criticising Federal Government policies as long as they “shortchange Nigerians.”

“Nigerians deserve better, and I will not shy away from pointing out these shortcomings,” the governor maintained.

“Lagos to Organize Social Media Tutorials for WAEC and NECO Candidates”

0

The Lagos State Government has launched the EKO Learners’ Support Programme, an innovative initiative aimed at aiding students preparing for the West African Examinations Council and National Examinations Council examinations.

This was made known by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, during an unveiling ceremony at the Education Resource Centre, Ojodu, Lagos, on Tuesday.

In his address, Alli-Balogun emphasised the importance of education as the foundation for development and highlighted the state’s commitment to providing students with the resources needed for academic success.

“This initiative has been designed to broadcast a head-start of 320 lessons in 10 different subjects; English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Government, History, Literature-in-English and Yoruba on Lagos Television and other social platforms, with proficient teachers, who were recruited painstakingly through thorough and rigorous screening.

The programme is scheduled for 26 weeks in the period leading up to the start of these public examinations with a duration of 30 minutes per episode and each episode archived for easy access by learners and teachers,” the commissioner stated.

The approach, according to the ministry, ensures that students have continuous access to the materials, enabling them to review content at their own pace and engage with teachers and peers online.

“The lessons after broadcast on television are archived permanently on social media platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, X – (formerly Twitter),” the commissioner added.

Alli-Balogun encouraged students to fully utilise the resource, emphasising that their hard work and dedication are crucial to their success. He also expressed gratitude to educators, partners, and stakeholders for their collaboration in making the programme possible.

“Addressing Poverty in Nigeria Through Family Planning”

0

The Chairman Association for the Advancement of Family Planning in Nigeria, Dr Ejike Oji, on Monday said family planning remains a solution to multidimensional poverty.

Oji said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.

He urged Nigerians to embrace family planning for quality living in all ramifications.

“Nigeria, at the moment, is one of the countries with multidimensional poverty.

“This means that a lot of homes in the country lack access to not just money but quality healthcare, food, water, education etc.,” he said.

The medical practitioner expressed optimism about the capability of family planning to reduce multidimensional poverty.

According to him, when parents plan well for childbearing and spacing, they will at least provide basic resources to their children and themselves.

Oji, who blamed the increase in insurgency and insecurity on a lack of family planning, said children born without good planning were vulnerable to becoming miscreants.

He alleged that many of the terrorists or insurgents in the country were children born without planning.

He called on the government at all levels to produce policies that would encourage family planning locally and nationally.

The National Multidimensional Poverty Index by the National Bureau of Statistics says 133 million Nigerians, representing over 60 per cent of the country’s population, are multi-dimensionally poor.

It says they are deprived of no fewer than one essential survival needs, which include good health, good living standards, basic education and gainful employment.

Stampede: Ooni’s ex-queen and others claim unlawful detention as Oyo opposes bail.

0

The Oyo State Government, on Tuesday, urged the state high court in Ibadan not to grant bail to the ex-queen of Ooni of Ife, Naomi Shilekunola, Hamzat Oriyomi, and a school principal, Fasasi Abdullahi.

The court had on December 24 remanded the trio in prison over the death of 35 children during a Christmas Funfair they organised in Ibadan, which resulted in a fatal stampede.

The defendants spent both Christmas and New Year’s Day at the Nigerian Correctional Services facility in Agodi.

During Tuesday’s hearing at High Court 8, Ring Road, Ibadan, the defence counsel urged the court to admit them to bail but the  Oyo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Abiodun Aikomo, opposed the bail requests, insisting that the applicants had not shown sufficient grounds for their release.

The bail request of the applicants must not be granted by the court,” Aikomo stated. He also countered claims of persecution by the state government, describing them as unfounded.

Earlier, the defence counsel argued that their clients’ detention was unconstitutional, citing procedural irregularities and challenging the court’s jurisdiction.

They maintained that the “holding charge” used to remand the suspects was not recognised under Nigeria’s Administration of Criminal Justice Act.

Waheed Olajide, representing Fasasi Abdulahi, principal of Islamic High School, Basorun, argued that the detention was unjustified.

No formal charge is preferred against the applicant before any court of competent jurisdiction,” Olajide said.

He further emphasised Abdulahi’s poor health condition, stating, “The law makes provision for exceptional circumstances, which include ill health, upon which the suspects can be released on bail. The applicant is battling with his health and needs to be taken care of medically.”

Silekunola’s lawyer, Musibau Adetunmbi (SAN), described her continued detention as unconstitutional.

“Anybody can be detained, but it must be in accordance with the law, irrespective of the offenscs committed,” he argued. “The applicants are being held in detention pursuant to a holding charge which is not known in the criminal administration of justice. Oyo State Government has acted illegally with the continuing detention of the suspects in the prison custody. All the evidences presented by the defense counsel to buttress their case are zero.”

Hazmat’s lawyer, Adekunle Sobaloju (SAN), similarly contended that the detention violated constitutional provisions.

“The holding charge used to clamp the suspects in the prison custody is not known in the criminal administration of justice,” Sobaloju argued.

Justice K.B. Olawoyin, after listening to submissions from both sides, adjourned the ruling on the bail applications till Monday, January 13, 2025.

Morka: I’ve received over 200 death threats after remarks about Peter Obi.

0

The APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, alleged he and his family have received death threats over his remarks about Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Morka stated that the threats were triggered by Obi’s accusation that his remarks during a Sunday interview on Arise Television constituted a threat to the LP candidate’s life.

During another appearance on Arise News on Wednesday, the APC spokesman disclosed that he had recorded over 400 threats, including approximately 200 explicit death threats, many of which were described in graphic detail.

Morka said, “Peter Obi’s allegations that my words in that interview threatened his life have triggered serious consequences.

As of now, I have documented 400 threats, about 200 of which are explicit death threats. These are written threats that I will be submitting to law enforcement agencies.

“In these messages, individuals have detailed how they plan to harm me—threatening to shoot me, behead me, and carry out other gruesome acts. This is not mere rhetoric. It has even extended to direct threats against some members of my family. These are explicit and graphic threats, not vague insinuations.”

He strongly denied making any comments that could be interpreted as threatening Obi’s life, describing the allegations as baseless

This entire situation is baseless and cannot be attributed to me. I did not threaten Peter Obi in any way. Those issuing these threats are acting on their own, but I trust that law enforcement will respond swiftly to bring them to justice,” he added.

Morka’s initial remarks during the Sunday’s interview sparked outrage after he accused Obi of “crossing the line” in his criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, asserting that the former governor“deserved whatever came his way.”

Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, called on the APC to apologise to Obi and Nigerians for what he described as inflammatory and disgraceful language.

Similarly, the LP issued a seven-day ultimatum to Tinubu, demanding that Morka be reprimanded for his comments.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Marcel Ngogbehei, Director-General of the Labour Party Directorate of Mobilisation and Integration, decried what he described as a targeted campaign against Obi.

Oshoba sets sights on world No. 1 after breaking into the top five.

Nigerian boxing sensation Elizabeth Oshoba has set her sights on becoming the world’s top-ranked super lightweight boxer after breaking into BoxRec’s top five rankings for the first time, The PUNCH reports.

The 25-year-old, who currently sits fourth behind established stars Katie Taylor, Amanda Serrano and Chantelle Cameron, expressed her determination to reach the summit.

“Nothing much to say, I’m aiming for number one. May God help me,” Oshoba told our correspondent.

The WBC silver featherweight champion has enjoyed a meteoric rise in 2024, maintaining a perfect professional record of eight wins with five knockouts, including a spectacular third-round stoppage of Argentina’s Agustina Rojas in June.

Earlier in January, Oshoba made history by becoming the first female Nigerian boxer to win a world title when she knocked out Italy’s Michela Braga in the 10th round at Copenhagen’s Royal Arena to claim the WBC silver featherweight crown.

Yes, of course, I feel on top of the world. I am very happy with this title, it is my first (world) title but I am still focused and I can’t wait to fight more world title fights,” she had said after that victory.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medallist sits ahead of American Samantha Worthington in the rankings, while Ireland’s Taylor (24-1, 6KOs) leads the pack, followed by Puerto Rico’s Serrano (47-3-1, 31KOs) and Britain’s Cameron (20-1, 8KOs).

Nigerian Boxing Board of Control Secretary-General Remi Aboderin believes Oshoba can achieve even greater heights.

“Now that she still has age and youthfulness on her side, she’s worthy of the main title and that should be her goal. We believe she and Efe Ajagba will soon be the made-in-Nigeria world boxing champions,” he said.

The super lightweight star already holds the IBO female super-featherweight title, which she won via unanimous decision against Italian Martina Righi in November 2023.
