Nigeria risks losing world’s second-largest ginger producer, Senator warns

0

Worried over the loss of N12bn due to the fungal disease that affected ginger farmers, the Kaduna-South Senator, Barr. Sunday Marshall Katung expressed fears that Nigeria may lose its position in the global market as the second-largest producer of the commodity if farmers are not compensated.

Arewa PUNCH recalls that the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Abdullahi, had confirmed the outbreak of the ginger blight epidemic in Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau, and the Federal Capital Territory.

He disclosed that preliminary estimates show that farmers in southern Kaduna alone lost over N12bn.

The Senator who is representing the Southern Kaduna Senatorial Zone, disclosed at a one-day workshop, organised by the Senate Committee on Capital Market in collaboration with the Lagos Commodities and Future Exchange, in Abuja, lamented that ginger farmers may not return to farming as the rainy season approaches if they are not compensated for the loss they incurred during the outbreak of the deadly disease.

Katung who also expressed worry that if the ginger farmers were not encouraged to by way of compensation, Nigeria may lose her position on the global stage as the second largest producer of the commodity, stressed, “The losses the ginger farmers incurred as a result of the outbreak of the fungi pathogens during the last farming season were monumental.

“You have to compensate them as a way of encouraging them (farmers) to go back to farming. If that is not done, farmers would no longer be interested in farming, and we will lose our position in the world as a country,” Sen. Katung told the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security.

NOW THAT FUEL SUBSIDY HAS BEEN REMOVED

0

By: Deacon Stanley Davies Olunogun

The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR on 29th May, 2023 in his inaugural address to Nigerians and the world affirmed that the era of fuel subsidy has gone. And this became a Law which cannot be reversed until certain processes have been taken.

There were agitations and expressions from different quarters in support and against the pronouncement.

To many who found this appropriate, I have join others to give reasonable advice on the issue to government, which brought up today the topic “Now That The Fuel Subsidy Has Been Removed”.

It’s pertinent to inform all pessimists that there is no time as germane as now when the President announced what he did not originate. The greatest favour he has to do for this country is that the removal should be made permanent.
To make it permanent, the removal should be followed with commitments in various sectors of the economy.

Some of the Nigerians who sojourn abroad often say “There is no place like home, but the home has been bastardised by the Politicians”. This is why it has been difficult for them to come back viewing the hardships those at home are facing in hands of the politicians.

For the reduction of these hardships, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken the bull by the horns. The first step is for him to take is not to increase work force salary as being advocated by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) which is not people oriented in its dealings but for the President to roll out palliatives which will affect all public utilities such as Mass Transit across the nation resuscitation; Roads infrastructure; Stabilisation of the Electricity sectors (Generation, Transmission and Distribution); Food security; insecurity; etc. The effects in these sectors are felt by majority of the populace and not by the shylock and egocentric individuals.

The administration of the President should thereafter make sincere commitments in the Petroleum sector in the area of Refinery and Petrochemical. Foreign partners could be engaged to buy all the country moribund refineries, repair them, produce and sell to the people while the government agrees on payback percentage as revenues to take care of other necessities of the economy.

We have no time to waste on ways to stabilise the tension of detractors on the government. They needed to see things are working out for them through government policies to reluctantly believe to support.

I am seizing this opportunity to express congratulations to the lucky ones who have been chosen by the President to tackle these tasks headlong while appealing once more for restraints to cause the Venezuelan example. We need peace which promotes advancements, unity and even developments.

The personality of our President is not carefree about the myriad of problems facing every citizen in particular and the entire nation in general, therefore he can be trusted with important matters like those of subsidy removal.
So help us God.

Bayer Leverkusen end Bayern’s 11-year reign, win first Bundesliga title

0

Bayer Leverkusen lifted the Bundesliga title for the first time in their 120-year history on Sunday, a 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen breaking Bayern Munich’s 11-year stranglehold on the German top flight.

Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen knew victory would secure the title with five games to spare, but there were no signs of nerves in a dominant performance.

A hat-trick from Florian Wirtz and goals from Victor Boniface and Granit Xhaka extended their unbeaten run to a stunning 43 games in all competitions.

Leverkusen’s maiden title, coming after five second-place finishes in their history, keeps their dream of a remarkable treble alive while shedding their unwanted ‘Neverkusen’ nickname for good.

With 10 minutes to go, the long-suffering fans began making their way to the sidelines and a few jumped the gun, storming the pitch with the match still ongoing.

Leverkusen’s players ushered the fans back and some obliged, albeit briefly, with the stands swiftly emptying on the 90-minute mark as tearful fans made their way onto the grass to celebrate with the players.

Leverkusen are now on 79 points — the best tally after 29 games in German league history — and are 16 clear of second-placed Bayern and third-placed Stuttgart.

APC chieftain decries N1,225 diesel price, seeks Tinubu’s intervention

0

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Osun State, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, on Sunday, called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the ongoing negotiation of diesel prices between the management of Dangote Refinery and marketers.

Oyintiloye said the refinery’s pump price for diesel at N1,225 was high for a product coming from an indigenous company, adding that there should be a major difference between the pump price of imported diesel and the one from a Nigeria-based refinery.

Addressing journalists in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, the ex-lawmaker representing Obokun State Constituency in the Osun State House of Assembly, said that the President’s intervention should bring about a downward review of the current pump price of diesel coming from the refinery.

Oyintiloye also advised Tinubu to ensure that the interests of Nigerians are protected in the negotiation.

The statement read partly, “There is no doubt that Nigerians are happy with the commencement of the operation of the Dangote Refinery. We commend Alhaji Aliko Dangote for the project. It is a huge one for the benefit of our economy.

“That the refinery has started releasing petroleum products to the market is a thing of joy for all Nigerians and a sign of good things to come. It is what we are all looking forward to, but for it to have a positive impact on our economy, we appeal to the President to intervene in fixing the price of the products coming from the refinery.

“What will be the justification that a product coming from Lagos is having the same cost as the one imported from another continent? Nigerians are sensitive, they will ask questions. The President must intervene and ensure that Nigerians are protected.”

The former lawmaker noted that “since the product is coming from an indigenous refinery, expenses on logistics in the area of importation, clearing, and other activities associated with bringing products into the country will be very minimal.”

Oyintiloye advocated a downward review of the diesel price, saying that in no distant time, other indigenous refineries would be revived, making petroleum products to be cheaper.

2027: I Can Contest Governorship From Anywhere In Ogun – Says Adebutu

0

ABEOKUTA  – The PDP governorship candidate in the last general elections in Ogun State, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu has disclosed that, he is eminently qualified to contest from any part of Ogun State.

Adebutu stated this on Thursday at the 92years remembrance ceremony for his late great grandfather, Pa Alimi Adebutu who died in 1932 at Ijeun Akoni in Odeda local government area of Ogun State.

Hon. Adebutu who went memory lane, explained that his late Paternal Great Grand Father gave birth to his Grand Father, late Kareem Owoiya who equally gave birth to his father, Sir Kessington Adebukola Adebutu.

He noted that, the good deeds of his late great grandfather has outlived him which endeared the community to remember him 92years after.

Asked if his Egba ancestral lineage was to prepare for his political journey in 2027, Adebutu maintained that, since discovering his ancestral lineage 10years ago, he never claimed to be an Egba man.

He stressed that, as a proper born Ogun indigene, he has every right to lay claim to any part of the state.

“This lineage has been there for ages, I have never claimed to be an Ẹgba man, but the truth is that, I am an Ogun person, I have the right to everywhere in Ogun state. Adebutu is Ogun state, my heritage has touched everywhere in Ogun state.

“My grand father, Pa Kareem Owoiya, the father of Sir Kessington Adebutu was born at Ijeun Akoni, so by birth, he is an Egba man and by extension, I am also an Egba man.

“Ladi is not just arriving today. In every major higher institution in Ogun state my heritage has impacted positively. My establishment that gives me my wealth is domicile in Ogun state. I am an Ogun indigene proper.”

Speaking on why he lost the 2023 governorship election, Hon. Adebutu noted that his simplicity and gentleman style of politics cost him Electoral victory.

He said one of the reasons he lost 99 polling units in the last election was because he refused to engage his political opponents with violence.

I believe in life after death. That’s why in the kind of politics I do, you will never see violence, you will never see desperation. One reason why 99 polling units in the last election were destroyed was because I refused that my people should repay violence with violence.

“I cannot be part of the process that destroys humanity. I believe life continues after death. That’s why I’m always careful.”

Budget padding controversy: Recall Ningi immediately, SERAP tells Akpabio

0

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has urged the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to recall Senator Abdul Ningi who was suspended for three months over his allegation of budget padding.

Ningi, the lawmaker representing Bauchi Central, was suspended for three months over an interview in which he alleged that the National Assembly padded the 2024 N28.7 trillion budget as against N25tn.

He was quoted as saying, “For the first time in Nigerian history, today we are operating two different budgets. One budget was approved by the National Assembly and signed by President Bola Tinubu, and the one was implemented by the presidency.

“The one approved by us is N25tn while the one operating by the Federal Government is N28tn.”

Two days after his resignation as the Chairman of the Northern Senators’ Forum, Ningi was replaced by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua (APC Katsina Central).

In a statement dated March 16, 2024, and made available to PUNCH Online on Sunday, March 17; and signed by SERAP Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the group urged Akpabio “to immediately reinstate whistleblower Abdul Ningi who was recently suspended from the Senate over his allegations that the lawmakers padded the 2024 budget by irregularly inserting projects worth N3.7 trillion.”

SERAP equally told the Senate President to refer the allegation to the country’s anti-graft agencies – the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Crimes Commission, which would improve public trust in the Senate.

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, on Monday, expressed full support for Ningi during the State Executive Council meeting, saying, “I made it clear that I stand firm in our support for Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi, of Bauchi Central.”

Meanwhile, SERAP followed suit, saying, “What Senator Ningi has done is a positive act of good citizenship. No whistleblower should ever be penalised simply for making a public interest disclosure.”

SERAP also urged Akpabio “to make a public commitment to discontinue the patently unlawful constituency projects in the next budget cycle.”

The statement continued, “Without inside information, corruption is hard to detect, prevent, and combat. Rather than suspending Senator Ningi, the Senate ought to have used his allegations as a trigger for addressing the lingering problem of budget padding and corruption in the implementation of constituency projects.

“Referring the allegations to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) would improve public trust in the ability of the leadership of the Senate to ensure probity and accountability in the budget process.

“We would be grateful if the recommended measures are taken within 7 days of the receipt and/or publication of this letter. If we have not heard from you by then, SERAP shall consider appropriate legal actions to compel you and the Senate to comply with our requests in the public interest.”

The organisation expressed its concern “about the opacity and lack of accountability in the spending of public funds on constituency projects since the return of democracy in 1999.

“SERAP is seriously concerned that years of allegations of budget padding and corruption in the implementation of constituency projects have contributed to widespread poverty, underdevelopment, and lack of access to public goods and services.”

At last, Adeleke moves to Government House

About one year and four months after taking over the reign of the state, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has finally moved into the Okefia Government House, Osogbo, the governor’s official residence.

Adeleke was sworn in on Sunday, November 27, 2022, and instead of moving into Government House, he has been living in his house in Ede, a nearby town to Osogbo.

Despite constant attacks from the opposition All Progressives Congress, Adeleke remained in his Ede residence and at times conducted business of the state there, on the basis that the Government House was under renovation.

The spokesperson for the governor, Olawale Rasheed, in a statement on Sunday, disclosed that after the completion of the renovation, Adeleke had officially opened the Government House and moved into the building.

Quoting the governor, the statement read, “I have upgraded the Government House just as I rehabilitated the Governor’s office. We ensured the Government House was rescued from the open neglect we inherited. You can all see the upgraded facilities which now place our state in good stead in the comity of states.

I met an abandoned guest house where top dignitaries can be hosted instead of huge bills on outside accommodation. I ordered its rehabilitation, and today, it is completed. The presidential lodge I met on the ground was in a terrible state. Our team fixed it.

“Our administration is passionate about upgrading state assets because they are for generations even yet unborn. We must act genuinely on the mantra that government is a continuum. Abandoning projects or state assets as Osun witnessed in the recent past is a sign of bad leadership.”

Adeleke noted that his administration is “completing old projects and initiating new ones. We are also maintaining and upgrading the old structures, refixing them for effective usage of the state.

“To the good people of Osun state, your governor has moved into the Government House. I pledge to redouble our efforts at delivering on the five-point agenda. We are truly fixated on sustaining the delivery of good governance.”

Nigeria must be secure before 2027 elections – Daniel Bwala

0

A former spokesman of the defunct Atiku-Okowa Presidential Campaign Council, Daniel Bwala, said Nigeria must be safe and secure before the 2027 general elections.

Bwala stated this in an interview on Arise Television on Friday.

The former spokesperson commended President Bola Tinubu for the intervention of his administration.

Bwala, however, said he had no regret joining the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

He said, “I have no regret going to PDP or supporting Atiku, I do my things based on conviction and at the end of the day, if it doesn’t work out, I accept my fate.

“The reality I have accepted now is that this politicking is gone and because of the crisis in Nigeria, the only way we can have a 2027 election is when Nigeria is safe and secure.

“I saw that this president I supported in APC is trying to ensure he rewrites the wrongs of the past administration.

“When he said he wanted all opposition to come together for nation building, I felt it was the right time to look at nation’s building rather than politicking. There must be a Nigeria before we do politics.”

Police raid AC Milan HQ over sale to RedBird

0

Italy’s finance police raided on Tuesday the headquarters of AC Milan as part of an investigation into the sale of the Serie A giants to American investment fund RedBird.

Milan confirmed the raids reported by Italian news agencies ANSA and AGI and said that the club itself was not being investigated, but that current CEO Giorgio Furlani and his predecessor Ivan Gazidis were.

The club added that the pair were being probed for “incorrect communication” to supervisory bodies and that Milan were “cooperating fully with the investigative authorities”.

AGI reported that Furlani and Gazidis were being looked at for obstructing Italian football’s supervisory commission COVISOC.

RedBird acquired Milan from fellow US group Elliott Management in August 2022 for 1.2 billion euros (at the time $1.3 billion).

AFP were told at the time of the sale that Elliott have financial interest in the form of a vendor loan to RedBird to help finance the acquisition.

Elliott had acquired Milan in 2018 when Chinese businessman Li Yonghong was unable to repay a loan he had taken out when he bought the club from the late Silvio Berlusconi’s Fininvest in 2017.
