Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) postgraduate students in the Department of Mass Communication have raised concerns over what they describe as irregularities surrounding the payment of school fees and additional academic-session charges.
The students, particularly those enrolled in the Public Relations programme, alleged that they were recently directed to pay school fees for another academic session which, according to them, they had not initially planned or expected to undertake.
According to the students, the 2025/2026 academic session for postgraduate Public Relations students was understood to cover a one-year programme. They said they were therefore surprised when information from the university reportedly indicated that they were required to make additional payments for another session, alongside an increase in the applicable school fees.
The development has reportedly generated frustration among some postgraduate students, who said the additional financial burden has placed considerable pressure on them. Some of the affected students alleged that the requirement to make another payment came at a time when they had already made significant financial commitments toward their postgraduate studies.
They further expressed concern that students who are unable to meet the additional financial requirements could be forced to discontinue their programmes.“We enrolled with the understanding that the programme would run for the stipulated period. Being asked to pay for another session has created serious financial difficulties for some of us,” one of the affected students said, requesting anonymity.
Another student appealed to the university authorities to provide clear information regarding the structure and duration of the programme, the basis for the additional payment, and whether affected students were properly informed of the financial implications before commencement of their studies. The students are calling on the OOU postgraduate school and relevant university authorities to review the situation and provide clarification to affected students.
They also appealed for transparency in the administration of postgraduate programmes, particularly regarding programme duration, tuition obligations and any changes to approved fees. The students said they believe a clear explanation from the university management would help address the growing concerns and prevent further misunderstanding between the institution and its postgraduate students. As of the time of this publication, the allegations presented by the students have not been independently verified.
OOU management and the relevant authorities are urged to provide their response and clarification on the matter.
